Team
Founder & Principal: Winton Davies, PhD
Brings 25 years of software development experience and 12 years of advanced research knowledge to your business. From his role as a Senior Software Engineer at Digital Equipment, he graduated with a doctorate from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He spent four years at Stanford as a research engineer working on the earliest parts of the semantic web and then 8 years as a research scientist at the company that revolutionized web profitability: Overture, Inc.
His most visible research work is Mindset (the version on display was engineered by John Carnahan). Mindset uses machine learning to classify web pages as commercial or research/informational, and this then allows the user to chose the mix they want.
His behind the scene’s work includes two novel applications of search engine techniques for matching advertisers to users queries, with increases of 10% and 15% in matching users to the appropriate bidded search ads.
He also developed two content-match / adSense-like algorithms, with one patent filed in this area. He was also a principal in the 8 Ball patent, the first bidded search term recommender system used by Overture. A similar project automatically generated tags from user text.
Prior to working in the bidded search field, he was the architect and lead engineer of Overture’s early expansion into the comparison shopping business (Goto Shopping), that integrated unstructured, structured and semi-structured data for a seamless product parameter-basd search.
In the very distant past he implemented the first ever commercial rule-based, mail filtering software. Overall, he is named in 10 patents filed by Overture and Yahoo, 3 as the sole inventor. He will bring creativity and novel problem solutions focussed on improving your business’s profitability.
